While Hawaii foreclosures have unfortunately displaced many people in Hawaii, the sudden supply of quality housing across the state has opened up a number of opportunities for people to move to the beautiful tropical paradise. The Hawaiian archipelago, comprised of hundreds of islands spread over a stretch of 1,500 miles of ocean forms the northern tip of the Polynesian triangle and is the most remote collection of islands in the world. More than two thousand miles from any other significant land mass, Hawaii’s dynamic atmosphere has been preserved, allowing future residents to look forward to a mixed culture of old and new. Ni’ihau, Kaua’i, O’ahu, Moloka’i, Lana’i, Kaho’olawe, Maui, and Hawai’i comprise the eight main islands of the Hawaiian island chain. Kaho’olawe is the smallest, with an area of almost forty-five square miles. Hawai’i is the largest, with 4,028 square miles of land.
The island is also expanding due to the Kilauea volcano, spewing lava into the ocean on the island’s southeastern-facing shore. The island of Hawaii is most commonly known as the “Big Island” to avoid
confusion with the state’s name. Although each island has its own, distinct, culture and way of life, each one uniquely blends in the tradition of Hawaiian custom. Recent estimates put Hawaii’s population at almost 1.3 million people.
